Whilst
leaving each individual to make up there own minds as to the veracity
of most of the statements contained in these leaflets, there are
certain inaccuracies which must not go uncorrected:
- "Not a single
landowner from Bolton Abbey to Ilkley has been
consulted" -Untrue. Every
landowner along the proposed route has been contacted and invited
to respond to the proposals.
- "The land... is
to be "grabbed" under....Section 26 of the Highways act
1980" -This refers to the power
of a local authority to redesignate, or create new, rights of way.
This is never undertaken lightly, and would certainly be a matter
of last resort in any case. When new rights of way are created,
landowners are invariably compensated, whilst retaining ownership
of their land. To state that this is what will take place, before
any access negotiations have even commenced, is alarmist and
irresponsible in the extreme.
